A bit of history
101D tubes were first designed by Western Electric in the early 20th century. It is a triode tube with direct heating, like the 300B but with a lower output and extremely precise low voltage amplification allowing excellent fidelity and linearity on all frequencies. At the time used in telecommunications, Western Electric never authorized the use of 101Ds by any other company. Thus, they have become extremely difficult to find today and the few remaining units display very high prices.

A few things to check before changing your 101D tubes
- Filament voltage and current: The filament voltage of the WE101D is 4.5V and its amperage is 1A. Check these settings to prevent damage to your device.
- The tubes socket: Check that your tubes to replace are perfectly identical to the Western Electric 101D, namely 4 short pins, as shown in the diagram below. If the pins are of different lengths and thicknesses, they may be WE101D-L tubes.
