Inertial frame system

Generally speaking, a headphone consists of a chassis, speakers with moving assemblies, ear pads and a headband. The development of the inertial system involves the interaction between the chassis and the mobile unit of the loudspeaker. In practice, each time the mobile unit of the loudspeaker moves in order to create a sound wave, an equal and opposite thrust will be exerted on the chassis which, by moving backwards, will decrease the dynamic impact. Spirit's inertial system provides the necessary mass to minimize this recoil effect and ensure maximum dynamic performance during sound transients.

Efficient current transmission

The brand's approach to current transmission is as radical as it is simple: preserving the energy supplied by the amplifier to the loudspeakers, avoiding dispersion. For this reason, the cabling does not incorporate intermediate connectors but is soldered directly to the speakers, eliminating two solders and a connector contact that could alter the integrity of the electrical signal.

The search for the cabling to be used was also tedious and required years of development work to arrive at a final configuration consisting of a 4-strand anti-inductive braid made of class 5 OFC Copper coaxial cables. This cable was designed by the Italian company Tasker, based on Spirit's specifications.

For connectors, the brand has turned to the Neutrik brand for balanced connections with separate grounding.

Treatment of internal reflections

This very important aspect of obtaining a faithful sound reproduction has also been particularly worked on. All the inner walls of the Spirit headphones are covered with felt to effectively dampen internal reflections. The material used for the ear pads has also been carefully selected, as this can form a second resonance chamber.

The Twin Pulse Isobaric System® technology requires an open structure in order to evacuate sound pressure without affecting the piston movement. The cushions are made of high density ZF foam and have been studied to offer a semi-open cell structure and a shape that guarantees comfort and the correct distance from the point of emission.

Nhoord Audio custom speakers

The integrated loudspeakers have been designed by leading brand Nhoord Audio according to Spirit's specifications to achieve a dynamic and natural sound reproduction.

In the same way as in the development of an engine, the focus was on the exhaust and intake of the air flows generated by the movement of the piston of the mobile unit. Thus, Twin Pulse technology has 4 rear ventilation ports allowing maximum freedom of movement even at low frequencies, for instantaneous impulse response.

The rear structure of the loudspeakers is treated with petals of Dynamat Extreme™ interposed between the vents to make the structure even more inert. The diaphragm is treated by Nhoord Audio with a special gel that optimizes the behavior of the loudspeaker at high frequencies.

Balanced connection with separate masses

The separation of the masses enables the true potential of a headphone to be delivered. Typically, in a conventional headphone, the negative pole of the left channel is connected to the negative pole of the right channel, making the two speakers interdependent in their movement. Spirit therefore provides separate masses to maximise the low frequency impulse response.

Digital mapping and compensation

Generally speaking, our listening is more easily influenced by irregularities in the midrange, frequencies to which the human ear is more sensitive. Spirit has therefore created a mapping of the frequency response of their headphones in order to apply digital correction parameters. These settings allow for a natural reproduction while preserving the original signal, the operation being performed in floating point mode before the digital-to-analog conversion.
