3E Audio, a recognized player in the DIY world, now offers a Class D Stereo amplifier incorporating audiophile Hi-Fi components. The A7 amplifier is based on two TI TPA3255 chips in PBTL configuration, and two dual OPA1612A OPAs. This means it can deliver up to 2x 250W into 4 ohm power.

In terms of connectors, the 3E Audio A7 features an RCA input, a practical balanced XLR/Jack 6.35mm combo input, and an output on speaker terminals. The RCA inputg gain can be adjusted (LOW=25dB, HIGH=28.5dB), and the preamplifier stage and volume control can be bypassed for use as a power amplifier. Versatile and high-performance, this little amplifier is able to offer a good reserve of power while preserving the final sound reproduction.

Product update

In response to feedback from the Audio Science Review community, 3E Audio has made a number of modifications to its amplifiers.

  • Auto power off time set to 20 mins.
  • Increase audio detection sensitivity RCA: 200uVrms; XLR: 400uVrms,this significantly meet some user listening in very very low volume.
  • Auto audio sensing power on/off can be disable/enable by user. To do so, simply press and hold the 5 seconds volume button in standby mode, and the RCA LED will flash for 3 seconds to deactivate it. To reactivate, follow the same procedure, but the XLR LED flashes for 3 seconds.

3E Audio A7: Two TPA3255 chips

The two TPA3255 amplifier chips offer a consistent level of output power, as the 3E Audio A7 delivers up to 2x250W into 4 ohm and up to 2x140W into 8 ohm (THD+N = 1%). In addition, the PBTL configuration maintains continuous, stable output power while reducing power losses. It also enables the amplifier to withstand loads of up to 2 ohms.

3E Audio A7: Interchangeable OPAs

The preamplifier stage of the 3E Audio A7 is made up of two double OPA1612A OPAs mounted in DIP 8 and easily replaceable with pliers, thanks to the design of the case. In fact, the OPAs can be accessed through two hatches without opening the case. Here's a non-exhaustive list of compatible OPAs: OPA1656, OPA1602, OPA2134, NE5532P, LME49720, LM4562, MUSES02, MUSES8920, NJM4580, NJM4556, NJM2068, OP249, AD827, etc.

Please take care not to damage the device or the OPAs when replacing or handling them. Any damage to the device caused by improper handling by the user (reverse mounting of OPAs, mounting of non-compatible OPAs, etc.) will invalidate the product warranty. Please refer to the manual to carry out the operation.

While they have more competition now, it is clear they intend to stay on top of this game, squeezing every bit of performance out of this architecture, while providing nice feature set. The amplifier body is high-quality, robust, heavy and the power supply is solid. The amplifier has a lot of power and freely drives my JBL L100 Classic MK2 speakers, I have never even turned up the volume to full. I use the amplifier together with a Wiim Ultra streamer and after adjustment the system sounds great. To adjust the frequency response in the room I used a Mini DSP Umik2 microphone and the PEQ program, the settings of which I transferred to the Wiim Ultra peq mode. I also use an XTZ 10.17 Edge subwoofer in the system. Thanks 3E Audio for perfect amplifier!

Excellent ampli !
Commandé un jeudi, reçu le lundi suivant, nickel ! Ce petit ampli est un vrai bijou de puissance et de contrôle des enceintes qu'il alimente. Si en plus il est fiable (on verra à l'usage, je ne l'ai installé qu'hier !), alors mon setup audio ne va plus bouger pendant un bon moment ! Seuls bémols:
1- l'ampli a été livré avec un cordon secteur pas adapté au bloc d'alim (2 broches au lieu de 3), j'ai dû prendre un cordon secteur avec la terre qui trainait dans un tiroir...
2- l'ampli est équipé d'un système d'auto-off/on avec des valeurs seuils discutables: en écoute à faible niveau, l'ampli s'éteint tout seul au bout de 5 min comme s'il ne recevait aucun signal, dommage pour une utilisation comme ampli de puissance avec bypass du contrôle de volume du A7. Pour contourner le problème, il faut atténuer en baissant le potard de volume de l'ampli, et augmenter le niveau de sortie du pré-ampli qui est avant.

Moyennant cela, l'ampli est génial et super bien adapté pour driver des enceintes de faibles impédances.
