The D&A Alpha Pro is a DAC headphone amplifier with excellent performance. It is based on audiophile components such as an ES9039MSPRO DAC chip, XMOS XU-316 USB interface, NJU72315 volume control and 4C-FBDA balanced discrete headphone amplification. Together, these components offer support for high-resolution streams up to PCM 32bit 768kHz, DSD512 and MQA, while providing 2x6000mW under 32 ohm headphone amplification. The DAC's balanced line output also boasts exceptional performance, with a dynamic range of 133dB and a THD+N of -124dB (0.00006%). On top of this comes support for Bluetooth aptX HD and LDAC, thanks to a QCC5125 chip. And that's not all: the architecture of this technological jewel, the D&A Alpha Pro, also features a high-performance clock circuit with no less than 3 femtosecond oscillators and 2 PLL clocks, plus two independent regulated linear power supplies. Finally, D&A has enhanced the appearance of its device with a beautiful transparent plate and numerous luminous elements on the front panel, giving it a pleasant retro-futuristic look. The many inputs and outputs available will make it the centerpiece of your Hi-Fi installation.
The D&A Alpha Pro benefits from an ES9039MSPRO chip with MQA decoder, coupled with a latest-generation XMOS XU-316 interface to support sampling rates up to PCM 32bit 768kHz. In addition, its overall structure greatly reduces noise level and output impedance to achieve a dynamic range of 133dB and a THD+N of -124dB on its balanced XLR output.
The D&A Alpha Pro's headphone amplification circuit integrates 32 discrete transistors within its 4 channels. This gives it an output impedance of < 0.1% and a THD of just 0.0001%, for extremely clean, clear sound at its headphone outputs. Moreover, it enables it to drive all types of headphones and IEMs from 16 ohms to 600 ohms impedance effortlessly. In fact, the Alpha Pro is capable of delivering up to 2x6000mW of power under 32 ohm load on its balanced XLR and 4.4mm jack headphone outputs, and up to 2x 3000mW @ 32 ohm on its 6.35mm jack headphone output. This is complemented by an NJU72315 analog volume control chip for precise rendering at both high and low volumes, for a pleasant listening experience in all circumstances.
The Alpha Pro, thanks to a QCC5125 Bluetooth chip, supports the high-resolution Bluetooth codecs SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX-HD and LDAC (24bit 96kHz). This provides a reliable, stable wireless connection and fast listening to your favorite streaming platforms via your phone, for example.
The Alpha Pro is a versatile device offering various output modes. These include DAC mode for bit-perfect PCM, DSD, MQA and LDAC decoding, preamp mode for balanced signals with different gain stages, and headphone amplifier mode with dedicated analog input and 3 headphone outputs.
The clock circuit of the D&A Alpha Pro is based on a dual PLL (Phase-Locked Loop) architecture combined with three high-precision femtosecond oscillators. A first PLL dedicated to the USB input ensures stable synchronization thanks to these ultra-low jitter oscillators, guaranteeing an extremely clean clock signal for digital streams. A second PLL, driven by a VCXO (Voltage-Controlled Crystal Oscillator) oscillator, supports coaxial and optical inputs, maintaining perfect stability whatever the source. This design reduces jitter to around 15ps, a remarkable level for a DAC in this class. The result: smoother digital-to-analog conversion, more accurate sound and a more realistic soundstage. The entire clock circuit is optimized to guarantee faithful audio reproduction, free from time distortion and digital artifacts.
The D&A Alpha Pro uses a dual filtered Mean Well power supply, followed by a separate discrete regulation stage for each rail (positive and negative) of the DAC and headphone amp circuits. It's worth mentioning that the regulation stage uses only transistors and discrete analog components. This architecture offers enormous stability, galvanic isolation of the conversion and amplification stages, reduced crosstalk and improved audio performance.
D&A has given its Alpha Pro a retro-futuristic look, thanks to an aesthetic that's at once modern, minimalist and vintage. Indeed, the Alpha Pro's components create a perfect harmony between innovation and nostalgia. This is thanks to a transparent plate and intelligent LEDs on the front of the device. As well as being decorative, the LEDs provide a visual indication of the device's operating status for clear, rapid feedback.
