Audiophonics HPA-S450ET Power Amplifier Class D Stereo Purifi 1ET6525SA 2x450W 4 Ohm

Audiophonics HPA-S450ET: Front view

The Audiophonics HPA-S450ET power amplifier is based on a Class D architecture, using a pair of Purifi 1ET6525SA amplification modules, a Hypex SMPS1200A400 power supply and an Audiophonics custom buffer stage, enabling the amplifier to deliver incredible performance. Like all Audiophonics Workshop products, this HPA-S450ET is meticulously designed and assembled by hand in our workshop in France.

The Audiophonics HPA-S450ET is a powerful, robust and high-performance amplification solution. It is capable of powering demanding HiFi audio systems, while revealing sound reproduction of incomparable finesse, rich in detail and perfectly transparent. There's no compromise here between power and sonic precision. The on-board Purifi modules feature a particularly rigorous design, delivering exceptional measured performance.

All elements and components are integrated into a solid, sturdy aluminum housing with a modern, streamlined design. This chassis also features openings and side heat sinks for efficient heat dissipation. What's more, its design effectively limits the impact of interference on the audio signal.

Audiophonics HPA-S450ET: Purifi 1ET6525SA amplification modules

Each channel of the Audiophonics HPA-S450ET amplifier circuit is equipped with its own Purifi 1ET6525SA amplifier module. These use high-performance Class D architecture, with available power of 2x450W into 4Ω or 2x230W into 8Ω (at 1% THD) and high efficiency of over 94%. They also guarantee a very low level of THD, intermodulation distortion and noise, for a rich, precise and perfectly transparent sound reproduction, perfectly respecting the original audio signal to reproduce your music with unequalled fidelity and without coloration. It also guarantees a wide, realistic sound image, for perfect immersion.

Purifi's ongoing research into non-linear control theory has led to the development of the first mathematically accurate large-signal model for self-oscillating amplifier controllers. This breakthrough enables the feedback circuit to be fully optimized, resulting in a significant performance improvement over other designs. What's more, these Purifi 1ET6525SA modules feature a complete protection system for enhanced durability.

Audiophonics HPA-S450ET: Hypex SMPS1200A400 power supply module

The power supply stage of the Audiophonics HPA-S450ET uses an ultra-high-efficiency Hypex SMPS1200A400 switch-mode power supply module, capable of developing 1200W of power. This has been specifically designed and developed by Hypex to provide the voltage required for optimum operation of the amplifier modules.

This high-quality, low-noise power supply perfectly meets the energy requirements of the Purifi 1ET6525SA amplifier modules. What's more, the amplifier modules themselves have an excellent ability to reject power supply noise. As a result, the HPA-S450ET is highly insensitive to power grid imperfections and voltage/current variations that can cause parasitic noise.

Audiophonics HPA-S450ET: Hypex SMPS1200A400 power supply module

Audiophonics HPA-S450ET: Proprietary buffer interface board

The two amplifier modules are driven in phase opposition to cancel the Power Supply Pumping effect. This makes for greater power supply stability, alternately distributing current calls on each rail and thus increasing its capacity. A voltage regulation stage is used to optimize the power supply to the OPAs and the auxiliary voltage supplied to the modules. One Audiophonics OPA1656 AOP is used per channel. These are very low-distortion PDUs, offering the highest transparency with very low THD. They are mounted on a socket so they can be replaced if necessary.

In addition, a gain control is located on the underside of the unit to suit all applications. Four gain settings are available: 12.5dB, 20dB (default), 25dB and 29dB.

Audiophonics HPA-S450ET: Balanced & single-ended connectors

Designed for easy integration, the Audiophonics HPA-S450ET features both balanced stereo input on XLR connectors and unbalanced stereo input on RCA connectors. Bipolar selectors on the rear of the unit allow easy selection of the active input, even enabling independent channel control. On the output side, insulated Audiophonics terminal blocks (developed in partnership with AEC Connectors) with 24k gold-plated contacts ensure an excellent connection between amplifier and loudspeaker. A 5-12V trigger module with input and output allows the amplifier to be integrated into an automatic on/off chain for your entire audio system.

This amplifier's trigger needs to be used with a mono trigger cable (sold separately).

Best amplifier
I ordered this amplifier specifically with the Purifi Eigentakt V2 modules in mind. For those reading this review who might be a bit confused: Class D was effectively reborn through Bruno Putzeys. In the late '90s, while still at Philips, he created UcD—the first Class D module that completely changed our understanding of the technology's potential. The project was eventually bought by Hypex, and Bruno moved there along with his work. As the years passed, things evolved; nCore arrived and gave the Hi-Fi industry another wake-up call, offering high-end Class AB performance at a fraction of the price.
Bruno, alongside Peter Lyngdorf and others, eventually founded Purifi, taking Class D to another level with the Eigentakt V1 (found in amplifiers like the NAD M23 or C298). More recently, we have the Eigentakt V2, which is featured in the NAD M23 V2 and M33 V2 at astronomical prices.
Today, Class D is everywhere: Technics, Marantz (in their high-end series), McIntosh (where certain receivers use UcD technology), NAD, Primare, Mola Mola, and so on.
I have personally owned the NAD M10 V3, Musical Fidelity M6SI, and Primare i35 Prisma DM36. To tell you the truth? At 1,500 EUR, this amplifier doesn't sound like its price tag—it sounds much, much more expensive.
Paired with the Eversolo DAC Z10 using low gain settings, it sounds incredible on my KEF R3 Meta speakers. Amir’s measurements on ASR (AudioScienceReview) for these modules put them in the same league as Benchmark amplifiers, but with double the power reserves.
It has no "signature" of its own; it is perfectly neutral. The bass is extremely lively, the mids offer absolute purity, and the highs are incredibly well-represented—containing everything you should hear and nothing you shouldn't.
The OPA 1656 buffer is exceptionally well-implemented. We saw this in previous Audiophonics models tested on ASR, where they even managed to slightly edge out the reference designs. Technologically, it is a step above the Nilai 500 or NCx500.
I am also using Audiophonics XLR cables, which were delivered flawlessly. They sound impeccable, proving you don't need to drop thousands of euros on "snake oil."
In conclusion, I’ve found my go-to shop in France. Greetings to the entire Audiophonics team from Romania! Thank you for this amplifier; it is not only impeccably built, but it sounds like a dream.

Simply great
Wow! This replaces an older but still much respected analog amp. I didn't expect there to be such an improvement. But the music now just seems more present. Speakers are ELAC Velas and I think they benefit from the greater oomph that S450 provides. And the amp looks good too. I'm very happy with my choice. Thanks Audiophonics!

AUDIOPHONICS HPA-S450ET Power Amplifier Purifi 1ET6525SA

Using it with Topping E50 II DAC and ghost OPAs
Just a small update on this fine amplifier. Using it with the new Topping E50 II DAC set in high output power (11.3Vrms) and the Audiophonics ghost OPAs. Bypassing the interface card and sending high output directly to the Purifi modules gives a very clean and transparent sound with zero colouration. Highly recommended.
