The DC-Tonfa by iBasso is a USB DAC and headphone amplifier with a discrete, balanced and differential R2R architecture, designed to handle the conversion of digital streams while directly driving a headphone or in-ear monitors. Its network of 312 metal film resistors individually calibrated, combined with an FPGA and a dual Accusilicon femtosecond clock, helps limit conversion and synchronization errors in order to preserve signal accuracy.
Intended for portable setups as well as computer audio systems, it combines balanced amplification capable of delivering up to 800 mW + 800 mW into 32Ω, advanced signal management with a NOS mode and proprietary digital filters, as well as connectivity supporting UAC 2.0, UAC 1.0 and SPDIF modes. This versatility, complemented by the OLED screen, the multifunction wheel and control via the iBasso app, allows it to integrate with different sources while maintaining precise adjustment of listening parameters.
The DC-Tonfa relies on an 8-channel discrete R2R architecture, fully balanced and differential, in which each channel is based on a network of individually calibrated resistors. The use of 312 high-precision metal film resistors, three times more than a traditional R2R architecture, allows the signal conversion to be refined while limiting errors related to component tolerances. This design thus promotes a more linear and detailed reproduction, with precise channel separation and better preservation of musical micro-information.


The DC-Tonfa combines an FPGA with two Accusilicon femtosecond oscillators, in order to precisely control the processing and conversion operations of the digital signal. The FPGA integrates a proprietary algorithm designed to reduce jitter and improve data synchronization, while the two dedicated clocks provide a stable time reference at the different sampling frequencies. This architecture thus limits timing errors and preserves the accuracy of micro-information, for a more coherent and detailed reproduction.
The DC-Tonfa offers a NOS mode, without oversampling, as well as four proprietary digital filters, controlled by the FPGA in order to adapt signal processing to listening preferences and to the characteristics of each recording. Beyond the direct reproduction enabled by the NOS mode, these filters offer several impulse responses and attenuation slopes, allowing the behavior of the converter to be modified while maintaining compatibility with high-resolution PCM streams. This approach thus offers a finer customization of the reproduction, from a fast response to a filtering with more gradual attenuation.

The DC-Tonfa combines a headphone amplification based on two OPAMP chips and four BUF634A operational amplifiers, in order to deliver up to 800 mW + 800mW into 32Ω on the balanced output. This architecture separates the voltage gain and current supply functions, which makes it possible to drive demanding headphones while maintaining a stable dynamic response. The available power is thus suitable for a wide variety of headphones and in-ear monitors, including low-impedance models.


The DC-Tonfa integrates an LT3042 linear regulator, whose low noise level improves the stability of the power supply to sensitive audio circuits. This regulation reduces residual disturbances and limits the propagation of power supply noise to the conversion and amplification stages, thus helping to preserve detail separation and signal accuracy.
Despite its high output power, the DC-Tonfa limits its consumption to 100mA at 5V thanks to an optimized circuit design. This power management reduces the demand on the phone's battery when used as a USB DAC, while maintaining a sufficient power supply for amplification and audio conversion.


The DC-Tonfa integrates a 0.96-inch OLED screen combined with a multifunction wheel, which centralizes the display of parameters and the adjustment of the device. This interface allows the volume to be adjusted, the digital filter to be selected, the gain to be changed or the mute function to be activated, while displaying essential information such as the sampling frequency.
The iBasso app for Android, complemented by a PC control panel, provides access to the advanced settings of the DC-Tonfa from a smartphone or a computer. This interface centralizes in particular sound customization, filter management and monitoring of playback parameters, while making it easier to adjust the device according to the source used.


The DC-Tonfa supports UAC 2.0, UAC 1.0 and SPDIF modes, in order to extend its compatibility to different devices and operating systems. The UAC 2.0 mode provides USB audio transmission suited to recent computers, smartphones and tablets, while UAC 1.0 allows use with older devices or those that do not support modern audio drivers.
The SPDIF mode, for its part, allows the DC-Tonfa to be used as a digital interface with a compatible source, transmitting the audio signal via a dedicated connection. This versatility facilitates its integration into configurations combining mobile devices, computers and Hi-Fi equipment.
