The FiiO Warmer R2R is a DAC combining discrete R2R conversion, a JJ E88CC tube stage and a linear power supply, all housed in a retro-style chassis equipped with a mechanical VU meter. It aims to deliver both accurate and warm sound reproduction with a typically analogue tone.
FiiO Warmer R2R: 24-bit DAC R2R
The FiiO Warmer R2R is based on a 24-bit R2R converter designed around a network totalling 192 precision resistors, divided into four channels of 48 resistors each. This entirely discrete architecture ensures conversion without a traditional DAC chip and emphasises warmer sound reproduction. The device also offers a choice of NOS (Non-Oversampling) or OS (Oversampling) modes, allowing for either a more raw and natural sound or a more detailed and cold sound, using oversampling up to 384kHz.
FiiO Warmer R2R: Tube buffer
The analogue section features four JJ Electronic E88CC tubes, used as a buffer stage to give the sound reproduction a warmer, more organic texture. These tubes, renowned for their stability and consistency, contribute to the deliberately soft, analogue sound signature of the Warmer R2R.
FiiO Warmer R2R: Mechanical VU meter
The Warmer R2R features a backlit mechanical stereo VU meter, providing immediate visual feedback on output levels. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this choice provides a clear indication of the signal's dynamic behaviour, in a decidedly retro style.
FiiO Warmer R2R: Linear power supply
The power supply is based on a 46W toroidal transformer. This linear approach ensures a clean power supply to the digital, analogue and tube stages, limiting interference and contributing directly to the overall stability of the device.
FiiO Warmer R2R: UAC Mode 1.0 and 2.0
Finally, the Warmer R2R offers a choice between UAC 1.0 and UAC 2.0 modes. This choice maximises compatibility with a wide variety of devices, including computers, consoles, media players, and USB sources, not all of which support the UAC 2.0 standard.
