With the SS18-22, Dayton Audio presents a 45.72 cm dual voice coil subwoofer driver. Designed for high-power applications, it combines an anodised aluminium cone with a triple magnet optimised by FEA simulation and a dual spider suspension to deliver 1300W RMS power output into 4Ω over a frequency range of 20Hz to 400Hz.
The SS18-22 uses a thick anodised aluminium membrane, combining lightness and rigidity. This diaphragm resists deformation well, even during significant movements, and maintains strictly pistonic movement throughout the entire excursion. An indexed transition between the cone and the suspension provides additional rigidity at the edges to resist deformation and minimise unwanted resonances. The long-travel butyl rubber suspension completes this assembly, optimised to allow high excursion while maintaining an excellent emissive surface.
The SS18-22 is powered by a 3-inch voice coil, using four layers of copper, coiled on an aluminium support. This configuration maximises the number of turns in the air gap to increase magnetic force while maintaining a reduced gap, ensuring precision. The aluminium support acts as a heat sink and contributes to stability during prolonged use. Combined with significant ventilation through the sub-cone, suspension, magnetic pole and air gap, this design limits thermal stress and allows for a rated power of 1,300 W RMS.
At the heart of the SS18-22 is a large triple magnet, engineered using FEA and generating a symmetrical magnetic field. This allows the diaphragm to move identically forwards and backwards, minimising distortion even at the limits of excursion. Precision-machined plates with sculpted edges maximise magnetic flux transfer, while an aluminium short-circuit ring and a large magnetic cap linearise inductance throughout the entire stroke. The result is reduced distortion and constant, precise control of sound reproduction.
To maintain linear cone movement and eliminate any risk of tilting, the SS18-22 uses a double spider suspension, spaced for greater stability. The connecting wires are stitched into the upper spider to improve mechanical reliability and prevent unwanted contact with the cone or suspension during heavy excursions. This design, combined with the precise control mentioned above, ensures smooth piston-like movement even when pushed to its limits.
