The iFi Audio iDSD GR 2 is a portable DAC and headphone amplifier, designed to ensure digital-to-analog conversion and drive headphones or an audio system. It delivers up to 1513mW into 32Ω, relying on a Burr-Brown PCM1795 DAC and a fully balanced architecture to maintain signal linearity and limit distortion across the entire audio path.
Designed for portable use or desktop configuration, it combines high-resolution conversion, extended digital and analog connectivity as well as direct control via a touchscreen interface, allowing management of both wired and wireless sources. This approach allows it to play a central role in a compact audio chain, while maintaining stable measured performance and adaptation to different types of headphones.
The iDSD GR 2 is based on a Burr-Brown PCM1795 DAC combined with an external I/V conversion stage to ensure stable analog conversion while preserving signal linearity. This design is accompanied by a simplified signal path with removal of electronic switches, which limits loading effects and distortion, while the use of Class A op-amps maintains consistent behavior across the entire dynamic range.
The architecture adopts a fully balanced scheme from the DAC to the headphone amplification, avoiding any internal conversion and reducing phase discrepancies. Processing supports PCM streams up to 32bit 768kHz and DSD512, while integrating 4 digital filters as well as K2HD and K2 processing, allowing adjustment of harmonic reproduction depending on the selected mode, with measurements of 0.006% distortion on headphone output, 0.0005% on line output and a signal-to-noise ratio of 115dB.

The headphone stage delivers up to 1513mW into 32Ω in balanced mode with a voltage of 6.94V, while maintaining 119mW into 600Ω at 8.60V, allowing a usable level with high-impedance headphones. This operation is also reflected in S-Balanced output with 567mW into 32Ω and 30mW into 600Ω, ensuring consistency between different connection types.
The output impedance remains limited to 0.4Ω in balanced and 0.2Ω in S-Balanced to minimize influence on the load, while the integrated iEMatch circuit allows adjustment up to 4.5Ω to adapt to sensitive earphones. This management is complemented by a protection system based on low-impedance MOSFETs, ensuring stability of the output stage during use.
The iDSD GR 2 integrates 3 digital inputs including a USB-C dedicated to data, an S/PDIF input combining optical and coaxial, as well as a Bluetooth 5.4 interface. The latter allows reception in aptX Lossless at 44.1kHz/16bits, as well as LDAC up to 990kbps, in addition to aptX Adaptive, aptX, LHDC/HWA, AAC and SBC codecs, ensuring extended compatibility depending on the source used.
The analog section groups two line input/output with one in balanced 4.4mm and the other in single-ended 3.5mm, allowing integration into different types of systems. The whole is completed by two distinct headphone outputs, in balanced 4.4mm and 3.5mm S-Balanced, as well as by a USB-C dedicated to 5V power supply, clearly separating audio and power functions.

The device is based on a 4900mAh lithium-polymer battery offering approximately 7 hours of autonomy, with a recharge in 3.5 hours via a 5V power supply above 1.8A through USB-C. Three operating modes are available, with a Battery mode for standalone use and a Desktop mode allowing direct power supply without using the battery.
The Hybrid mode prioritizes external power while using the battery during consumption peaks, then automatically returns to the main power supply once demand stabilizes, which limits charge cycles. Control is carried out via a color OLED screen with touchscreen interface providing direct access to settings, while the iFi Nexis application allows adjustment of advanced parameters and OTA updates.
