With the LD230TDR08, Atohm presents a high-quality subwoofer driver. The result of proven know-how and all the expertise acquired during the development and production of previous versions since the LD210, this latest generation LD230 ‘TDR’ embodies excellence in covering the 20Hz-300Hz band. Thanks to its advanced technologies, this 23cm woofer pushes the limits of a driver of this diameter to the utmost: unheard-of performance, both in active subwoofer applications and in the bass channel of very high-end speakers.
The diaphragm, made from a specific alloy, has been optimised to guarantee ‘piston’ operation over a wide bandwidth and under the most demanding conditions. The highly rigid aluminium coil support reinforces the base of the membrane and ensures perfect mechanical transmission. Intimately bonded by high-performance structural adhesive, these two metal parts actively contribute to cooling the coil, thus guaranteeing exceptional power handling.
The peripheral suspension, with an LDS profile, ensures exemplary linearity across the nominal excursion range while maintaining perfect geometry under the highest internal pressures (low-volume closed load or internal pressure at the tuning frequency of a bass reflex load, for example). Made from a material with low creep, the spider features progressive geometry using M-GUARD technology.
The combination of these two elements behaves in a completely symmetrical manner during positive and negative movements, thereby reducing ‘dynamic slippage’. It also guarantees a very wide linear excursion (+/-13 mm) with, beyond that, a significant increase in stiffness, thus acting as a mechanical ‘limiter/soft clipping’ during maximum excursions.
Thanks to Athom FWI's proprietary technology, the powerful motor provides a high, symmetrical and stable force factor over a wide range of excursion and power. Precisely designed using advanced electromagnetic simulations (F.E.A), the pole pieces and thick demodulation ring have been optimised to concentrate the maximum amount of ‘static’ magnetic flux from the magnet while limiting interaction with the unwanted ‘alternating’ flux generated by the coil, thereby reducing and linearising the inductance value.
