FiiO Air Amp Streaming Amplifier ES9020Q WiFi Bluetooth 2x120W 32bit 768kHz DSD512 Silver
The FiiO Air Amp is a compact streaming amplifier that combines a streamer, a DAC and Class D stereo amplification. Paired with the supplied power supply, it delivers up to 2×120W into 4Ω and supports PCM streams up to 32bits 768kHz as well as DSD512.
Designed to centralize the sources of a hi-fi system, it combines network streaming, Bluetooth LDAC and analog and digital inputs, while also offering a pre-out and a subwoofer output. Its 10-band parametric equalizer allows the sound to be adapted to the speakers and the room, in both desktop and living room setups.
FiiO Air Amp: TPA3255 amplification
The FiiO Air Amp relies on a Texas Instruments TPA3255 chip to drive a pair of speakers in a compact format. Its Class D operation combines high efficiency and substantial output power while limiting heat build-up in the unit. With the supplied 48V 5A power supply, it reaches 2×120W into 4Ω with distortion below 1%, and 2×90W into 8Ω.
This headroom makes it suitable for bookshelf speakers as well as some mid-sized floorstanding speakers. To increase available power, a 48V 10A power supply (not included) can be used: the FiiO Air Amp can then deliver up to 2×235W into 4Ω and 2×150W into 8Ω, with distortion below 10% under the stated measurement conditions.
FiiO Air Amp: PFFB architecture
The amplification stage incorporates PFFB (Post-Filter Feedback), which takes the signal after the output filter. This architecture helps reduce distortion and limit the influence of speaker impedance on the amplifier's response, for more consistent behavior with different loads.
Under its measurement conditions, the unit achieves distortion below 0.002% and a signal-to-noise ratio above 110dB. FiiO complements this design with selected components, including WIMA, Nichicon, Rubycon and ELNA capacitors, to stabilize the circuit power supply and preserve the signal.
FiiO Air Amp: ES9020Q DAC
Digital-to-analog conversion is handled by an ESS ES9020Q chip, paired with a 16-core XMOS XU316 USB interface. Connected to a computer via USB-C, the FiiO Air Amp accepts PCM files up to 32bits 768kHz and native DSD512; it can thus serve as a USB DAC and amplifier in a desktop or living room setup.
The digital inputs also allow other sources to be connected: the coaxial input supports PCM up to 24bits 192kHz and DSD64, while the optical input accepts PCM up to 24bits 96kHz. A TV, CD player or other compatible digital device can thus join the same system.
FiiO Air Amp: A streaming amplifier
The built-in network player connects to the home network via dual-band 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Gigabit Ethernet. AirPlay allows streaming from an iPhone, iPad or Mac, while Roon Ready compatibility makes integration into a Roon-controlled setup easier. The QPlay protocol completes these streaming options.
The FiiO Air Amp can also play files shared on a NAS via DLNA, with content selected from the FiiO Control app. Network and local streams are supported up to 32 bits / 384 kHz and DSD256, providing access to high-resolution libraries without adding a separate network player.
FiiO Air Amp: Bluetooth 5.2
The Bluetooth 5.2 link allows direct streaming from a smartphone, tablet or computer. In addition to the SBC codec, the FiiO Air Amp supports LDAC, which allows a higher bitrate with compatible devices. This connection offers quick access to content on a mobile device, without going through the home network.
FiiO Air Amp: Extensive connectivity
A USB port allows playback of files stored on a USB stick or external hard drive. Tracks and albums are browsed from the FiiO Control app, providing a local source without a computer or additional network player.
The other inputs include a coaxial link, an optical input, an RCA input and USB-C for a computer. The RCA input accepts an analog source, for example a CD player, an external DAC or a turntable with a phono preamp; two sensitivity levels allow the input to be matched to the output level of the connected device.
In addition to the speaker outputs, the FiiO Air Amp features a pre-out to feed a power amplifier or active speakers. It can then be used as a network player, DAC and preamplifier. A dedicated subwoofer output also allows the system to be extended to a 2.1 configuration.
FiiO Air Amp: 10-band equalizer
The 10-band parametric equalizer, adjustable from FiiO Control or a web interface, allows the response to be modified according to the speakers, the room or listening preferences. Presets and the Auto EQ function make it easy to apply preconfigured curves, while manual adjustment allows precise control over frequency bands.
Separate bass and treble adjustment over a ±10 dB range completes these settings. Together, they allow the sound to be quickly modified or a custom equalization to be built according to the setup.
FiiO Air Amp: FiiO Control app
The front panel features a 1.1-inch LCD screen for viewing operating information, as well as rotary controls for adjusting volume and accessing settings. From the FiiO Control app, the user can browse local or network files, manage the connection and configure equalization.
