The FiiO K15 is a versatile device that acts as a DAC, headphone amplifier and network audio player. Digital-to-analogue conversion is handled by a pair of AKM AK4497SVQ chips, supporting files up to PCM 32bit 768kHz and DSD512. For its amplification stage, the K15 uses a discrete Class AB architecture with MJE243G and MJE253G transistors to deliver an output power of 2x3000mW under 32Ω.
The FiiO K15 does not support standalone network playback (it cannot directly access streaming services) and requires the use of a third-party application for music control and playback.
For its conversion stage, the K15 is one of the very first to incorporate a pair of the new AKM AK4497SVQ DAC chips. These chips utilise ‘VELVET SOUND’ technology, delivering exceptional levels of distortion, dynamic range and bandwidth extension. As a result, the K15 is capable of handling signals up to PCM 32-bit 768kHz and DSD512 with remarkable precision.
For its amplification stage, the K15 features a discrete Class AB circuit, using MJE243G and MJE253G transistors and operational amplifiers in a symmetrical arrangement to deliver 2x3000mW of output power, allowing you to effortlessly drive even the most power-hungry headphones.
In order to offer the best flexibility of use, the FiiO K15 incorporates a significant number of connectivity options. Thus, in addition to optical, coaxial and balanced 4.4 jack inputs, it is also capable of supporting 768kHz PCM and DSD512 streaming via USB thanks to the inclusion of an XMOS XU316 interface.
In addition, the K15 offers wireless connectivity thanks to a Bluetooth 5.1 chip compatible with LDAC, aptX, aptX LL, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, AAC and SBC codecs. Finally, it can also act as a network receiver via RJ45 or Wi-Fi thanks to its support for AirPlay and Roon Ready protocols.
The entire audio chain, starting with the DAC, low-pass filter, gain control and amplification stage, uses fully balanced signal processing for excellent interference elimination, minimal distortion and high dynamic range.
The K15 benefits from a low-noise 30W switching power supply. This is coupled with 14 low-dropout regulators (LDO) and numerous ELNA and Nichicon capacitors to ensure that each component of the K15 receives a stable power supply free of any unwanted artefacts.
Furthermore, in order to minimise crosstalk, the digital and analogue power supply stages are physically separated and spread across three different PCBs. Finally, the K15 also features an external DC power input, allowing you to connect it to an external linear power supply of your choice if desired.
The K15 also incorporates two ACCUSILICON femtosecond clocks at its core, effectively reducing noise related to phase errors in the final audio signal.
In order to offer instant responsiveness, the K15 is based on a solution combining an Ingenic X2000 processor and an ESP32-S3 microcontroller, ensuring stable and fast signal processing while guaranteeing a perfectly smooth user experience.
In addition to its technical excellence, the K15 also boasts a retro aesthetic that prioritises ease of use and practicality. The front panel features various control knobs and a 3.93-inch LCD touchscreen, while the aluminium body has numerous grilles to ensure excellent heat dissipation.
For its K15, FiiO has developed a 10-band equaliser. This allows you to customise the frequency response with excellent precision, as well as export, import, share and save equalisation curves. Whether you choose to use the recommended settings or share your own settings online with other enthusiasts, it's very easy to access them, either through the FiiO Control app or the online version.
