With the EH90, Shanling introduces a high-end R2R DAC paired with a headphone amplifier. Designed to process high-resolution digital streams up to PCM 32bit 768kHz and DSD512, it relies on an R2R architecture built around discrete components in order to preserve signal precision and dynamics. Its balanced XLR, 4.4mm Jack and unbalanced 6.35mm Jack headphone outputs, along with its RCA and XLR preamplified outputs, allow it to integrate equally well into a headphone listening system and a complete Hi-Fi installation.
Shanling EH90: A fully discrete R2R architecture
The EH90 features an R2R DAC developed by Shanling and based on a fully discrete topology. This design uses 212 precision resistors matched to 0.01%, arranged across four channels to form a differential conversion. This architecture supports high-resolution signals up to PCM 32bit 768kHz and DSD512. Signal processing is also assisted by an FPGA, which handles the management of the various formats and digital inputs.
Shanling EH90: Headphone amplifier with MOSFET architecture
The headphone amplification section relies on a JFET input stage using JFE2140, combined with a MOSFET output stage based on IRF530N and IRF9530N. This design allows a current capability suited to driving headphones with varied impedance and sensitivity levels, while maintaining a stable response across the load. The EH90 can deliver up to 5.2W into 32Ω on the balanced output, allowing it to drive different types of headphones, from high-sensitivity portable models to more demanding audiophile headphones. The gain adjustment adapts the amplifier's operation to the characteristics of the headphone used, while the volume control ensures precise adjustment of the listening level.
Shanling EH90: Digital and analog connectivity
The EH90 brings together several digital inputs to adapt to different sources: USB, coaxial, optical and I2S. An HDMI ARC input also allows the audio signal from a compatible television to be retrieved and then routed to the DAC or the headphone amplification section. The analog section includes RCA and XLR line outputs, usable to connect the EH90 to a power amplifier, active speakers or another Hi-Fi component. The unit can thus serve as a DAC, headphone amplifier or preamplifier within a complete installation. The headphone connectivity combines an unbalanced 6.35mm jack output with a balanced 4.4mm jack output, in order to support the main types of cables and listening configurations.
Shanling EH90: Bluetooth 5.4
For wireless sources, the EH90 supports Bluetooth 5.4 as well as the LDAC, aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive, aptX HD, aptX, AAC and SBC codecs. This connectivity allows audio streams to be received from a compatible smartphone, tablet or computer, without requiring a wired connection between the source and the unit.
Shanling EH90: A separate power supply
The EH90's power supply separates the analog and digital sections in order to limit interactions between the various circuits. The analog section uses a dedicated 35W linear transformer, while a 10W power supply handles the digital circuits. The filtering relies on a total announced capacitance of 12000µF, distributed across the various power supply stages of the unit. This organization provides a stable power supply to the conversion and amplification circuits, while limiting the disturbances generated by the digital sections.
Shanling EH90: External clock input
The EH90 features an external clock input compatible with 44.1kHz and 10MHz frequencies. This connection allows the unit to be linked to an external master clock within a digital installation equipped with a dedicated synchronization reference. Users who favor centralized synchronization can thus integrate the EH90 into a larger digital system, while the unit remains usable on its own in a conventional Hi-Fi configuration.
Shanling EH90: Display and control of the unit
The front panel features a 4.8-inch backlit display, intended to show information relating to the source, the signal format and the current settings. This display surface accompanies the volume selector and the front-panel controls in order to ease access to the main functions. The presence of a large display allows the playback and configuration parameters to be consulted more directly, both during headphone use and within a preamplification setup.
Shanling EH90: Aesthetics inspired by the 1990s
The EH90 revisits the aesthetic codes of Shanling units from the 1990s, with a CNC-machined aluminum front panel and a retro segment display. Its aluminum chassis adopts a rigid construction, designed to house the various power supply, conversion and amplification stages. This presentation combines direct reading of the controls with discreet integration into a Hi-Fi system, whether installed on a desk, in an audio cabinet or within a Home Cinema configuration.
