The Audio-GD R-1 MK3 is a discrete R2R digital-to-analogue converter designed to provide conversion up to PCM 32bit 384kHz and DSD512, using a matched resistor architecture driven by FPGA DSP to ensure linearity beyond 16 effective bits. This resistor ladder topology, combined with proprietary digital processing, aims to achieve a more direct analogue reproduction than Delta-Sigma conversion, while limiting the impact of jitter and clock noise on the final signal.
Designed for high-fidelity systems requiring conversion without an integrated chip and a fully discrete analogue section, it combines advanced digital processing, a pure Class A output stage without global feedback, and a linear power supply with separate R-Core transformer windings to ensure constant electrical stability.
A discrete R2R DAC is recognised as being superior to an integrated R2R chip, such as the PCM1704K or AD5791, offering a more natural mid-high range when listening. R2R DACs filter out clock noise that is not found on the analogue signal and are less sensitive to jitter on 16-bit definitions. The analogue signal is theoretically more accurate than a DAC based on Delta Sigma technology.
The FPGA DSP implemented in the Audio-GD R-1 DAC compensates for the inaccuracy of resistors beyond 16/21-bit. This provides high precision even at high definition 24-bit 384 kHz. Other technical features include improved processing from SPDIF inputs (coaxial, optical), superior to standard integrated interfaces (WM8505, DIR9001) thanks to faster processing power and FIFO buffer stages that drastically reduce jitter.

Based on more than 20 years of expertise, Audio-GD excels in the creation of analogue stages without negative feedback. The output circuit of the R-1 DAC benefits from this extensive research with stages made entirely of selected and matched discrete transistors. There are no surface-mount components and a minimum of components in the signal path. The final buffer stages use wide-bandwidth FET transistors in two parallel stages, ensuring low output impedance. This last section has no capacitors in the signal path. Of course, this converter features high-speed ACSS high-current outputs. There are no relays on the analogue circuit, in keeping with the spirit of “less is better”.

A good DAC is nothing without a high-quality power supply that produces the lowest possible noise. The R-1 features a low-radiation R-Core transformer with triple windings for the left and right digital and analogue stages. Each voltage is distributed across a total of 13 pure Class A regulation groups, producing very low noise and fast impulse response.
