The iBasso Kunlun is a desktop headphone amplifier featuring a fully discrete design, engineered to deliver high current whilst maintaining a fast and controlled response. It delivers up to 7400mW per channel under 32Ω in balanced mode, utilising a GaN FET transistor topology and an extended amplification stage to ensure excellent load handling and stable dynamics.
Designed to drive high-performance headphones, it combines high-current amplification, a low-noise linear power supply and precise analogue volume control, allowing the operation to be adapted to the sensitivity of the headphones. This approach enables it to be integrated into a fixed-installation system, ensuring low noise levels and stable performance, even at high listening volumes.
The iBasso Kunlun features an output stage comprising eight GaN FETs, marking the integration of this high-electron-mobility technology (up to 2000 cm²/Vs) into a desktop headphone amplifier. Beyond this feature, the reduction in Miller-type parasitic load (QGD) accelerates switching transitions, limiting high-frequency losses whilst improving signal stability. Applied to audio amplification, this approach results in a faster transient response, better dynamic tracking and greater control over signal variations, particularly with complex loads.

This approach is further enhanced by a fully discrete architecture comprising a total of 40 transistors, combining 8 output power transistors with a 16×2 driver configuration, thereby significantly increasing the current capacity. Compared to a topology based on operational amplifiers, this structure allows for a higher dynamic headroom, whilst maintaining detailed reproduction even at high volumes. This ability to deliver both power and finesse simultaneously is evident in the handling of dynamic variations, particularly with low-efficiency headphones.
In line with this focus on available current, the Kunlun delivers up to 7400mW per channel into a 32Ω load in balanced mode, enabling it to drive high-impedance or low-sensitivity headphones without dynamic compression. This power output is accompanied by stable load handling, ensuring consistent reproduction even during transient peaks, which results in greater clarity in complex passages.

In addition to the amplification stage, the choice of a linear power supply helps to minimise background noise by avoiding the switching artefacts typical of switching power supplies. This approach is complemented by monitoring of the DC components, which isolates the headphones in the event of a fault to protect the drivers. Together, these features help maintain a stable electrical environment, conducive to interference-free reproduction.
The Kunlun features a volume control circuit based on Texas Instruments components, ensuring precise balance between channels even at low volumes, whilst maintaining a linear signal response. This is complemented by an analogue potentiometer, offering direct tactile adjustment, whilst a three-position gain control adapts the amplification to different headphone sensitivities. This combination helps to minimise noise and distortion whilst maintaining consistent sound reproduction across the entire listening range.

The assembly is housed in a CNC-machined aluminium chassis, whose anodised finish enhances resistance to mechanical stress whilst ensuring efficient heat dissipation. The design of the top cover facilitates heat dissipation, whilst the internal layout optimises thermal flow, enabling stable operating conditions to be maintained under heavy load. This thermal stability directly contributes to consistent performance over time, particularly during extended listening sessions.
