With its Micro iDSD Signature, iFi Audio has released a formidable battery-powered DAC / Headphone amplifier combo.

The device incorporates a completely balanced digital to analog conversion circuit (DAC) with two Burr-Brown chips managing each channel of the stereophonic signal separately. This conversion stage supports very high resolution  of PCM 768kHz and DSD512 files as well as MQA formats.

Capable of operating with various digital audio sources, it has a USB-A connector as well as a digital jack 3.5mm SPDIF connector capable of working in coaxial as well as in optical mode.

The Micro iDSD offers two variable headphone outputs (balanced 4.4 and unbalanced 6.35) as well as an unbalanced RCA output to directly drive a preamp / integrated amplifier / active speakers.

Strictly speaking, this is not a nomadic device, since the micro iDSD is still sized like a compact desktop DAC. Its battery power supply is better explained by a design extremely careful to filter out parasitic noise.

The fact remains that the Micro-iDSD Signature is capable of operating in total autonomy, which is sure to interest Audiophiles looking for a reliable device that is easy to carry during their test sessions and when listening to new audio material.

Balanced DAC stage

Built around two Burr-Brown DAC chips, the conversion stage takes advantage of four pairs of differential signals - two per channel.

This type of balanced construction drastically reduces background noise while ensuring excellent channel separation, which promotes intelligibility of micro details and nuance in the dynamics of your high-resolution tracks.

The circuit is accesed via a USB-3 type A or SPDIF / Coax / Optical connector on jack 3.5mm. The USB input has an integrated iPurifier iFi Audio circuit.

The Micro iDSD Signature is capable of supporting PCM streams up to 768kHz, DSD streams up to 512, 2xDXD streams and even MQA files.

The DAC chips used are "True Native" Burr-Browns selected by iFi for their ability to natively manage all these encoding technologies (no conversion from one encoding to another before conversion into an analog signal), in order to maintain maximum audio quality from one format to another.

A status LED cleverly indicates the currently playing file format as well as its resolution to confirm at a glance that the audio playback and the conversion are taking place in the best conditions.

The circuit embeds the whole iFi signal correction arsenal. Particular care has been taken to reduce jitter thanks to a dynamic buffer memory and extensive use of femto clocks. The PCM / DSD and DXD filters are directly interchangeable via a three-position selector located on the side of the device.

Headphone Amplifier

The Micro iDSD Signature's headphone amplification circuit is capable of delivering up to 4100mW, which is a substantial power reserve able to handle both sensitive in-ear monitors (IEM) and the most demanding planar headphones. Its circuit is designed so as to be completely free of coupling capacitor in order to avoid any alteration liable to distort the musical message.

Headphone outputs are available via a balanced 4.4mm jack connector as well as an unbalanced 6.35mm jack connector. The device can therefore be easily connected to most high-fidelity headphones without requiring an adapter.

The analog volume is controlled by a rotary potentiometer located on the front panel. A first POWER MODE selector on the side panel allows the global power level to be adjusted to suit the requirements of your headphones or to limit the use of the battery. Conversely, a second iEMatch selector offers different modes to work with the most sensitive IEMs.

The musical correction is not left out either since two selectors on the front allow the activation of the integrated iFi Audio analog correction circuits (XBass+ and 3D+).

Each of the two outputs is integrated by following the S-Balanced model from iFi, which makes the most of a signal almost exclusively supported by a balanced circuit even on the unbalanced output.
