GLA Volume Control Module
Volume Control Module 50KOhm with Encoder / Display / Remote Control
This GLA digital volume control module consists of an encoder, a display and a remote control. Dedicated to audio volume control, this module replaces traditional mechanical potentiometers, and thanks to its integrated chips avoids sliding noises. Its many functions make it an ideal choice for any DIY project:
- Volume position memory: the last volume level is retained on power-on.
- The sound can be muted: using the remote control or by pressing the potentiometer.
- Wide volume control range: -79db to +10dB
- Tone control : bass medium, treble from -9db to +14dB
- Pre-amplification function: this enables good output volume on low-level devices such as laptops or telephones by activating the "loudness" mode (to activate this function, short-circuit the OP1 solder joint).
- Subwoofer signal output on solder pads: 85Khz cut-off frequency (cables for this application are not supplied).
- Another infrared remote control can be paired: this must be NEC-coded to be supported.
This GLA module has an input impedance of 50KOhm with an input and output signal of 2.1Vrms (@ THD+N = 1%) for an operating voltage of between 12V and 15V DC.
Volume control module components
Encoder
This first PCB integrates a potentiometer, 2 voltage regulators 78M09 and 78M05, and a STC15W204S microcontroller. Inputs and outputs include a stereo signal input on a 3-pin JST connector and its output counterpart, a subwoofer output on solder pads and a 2-pin JST power supply input. It is then connected to the display via a 6-pin connector.
Display
This module features a LED display with a 16-channel JXI5020 LED microcontroller. It controls light intensity and the information to be displayed on the screen. An IR receiver and LED indicator are also present on the front of the PCB.
Remote control
A small infrared remote control allows you to control the sound level and "MUTE" function from a distance. Very practical, it eliminates the need to move around and systematically use the potentiometer to access the different levels of the volume control range.

How to use equalization settings
To access the bass, midrange and treble equalization settings, you need to perform a few manipulations. First, put the module in "Mute" mode by briefly pressing the potentiometer. Then press the potentiometer button or the ON/OFF function on the remote control for 5 seconds until "Lo" appears on the display. This means you have entered the EQ adjustment mode. Next, turn the potentiometer to activate the "on" setting. Press the potentiometer once briefly, or press the ON/OFF button on the remote control, to select bass, midrange or treble, then adjust the parameters using the potentiometer.
The following functions can be set:
- Volume equalizer: "Lo" display, adjustable "on" or "of".
- Bass: "S_" display, adjustable from +14dB to -9dB
- Mediums: Display "S-", adjustable from +14dB to -9dB
- Treble: Display "S^", adjustable from +14dB to -9dB
Pairing another remote control with function learning
To pair a NEC remote control, press the potentiometer for 5 seconds until "Lo" is displayed. Continue pressing until "88" is displayed. Then turn the potentiometer to the left to enter learning mode. When "dn" is displayed, press the Vol- button on your new remote control. If pairing is successful, "uP" will appear on the display. Then press the Vol+ button. If pairing is successful, "--" will be displayed. Then press the mute button. The display should change automatically to indicate that the learning operation is complete.
Only NEC remote controls are supported.
