In its third generation, the SBC VIM Khadas upgrades not only its performance with the A311D architecture (x4 Cortex-A73 Cortex A53 2.2Ghz + 2x 1.8GHz), but also gain new features. This single board computer is therefore aimed more than ever towards hybrid projects combining calculation speed, graphics processing, capture / measurement / aquisition and user interactions.
Keeping the great graphics that made it first successes, the VIM 3 is enriched with a new display output with all the connections needed to connect is a secondary display (with auto rotation support). Similarly, the card can now accommodate two cameras through a native connectors available.
VIM 3 now embeds an NPU and can run neural network systems (deep learning) which is a perfect opportunity to learn and use this technology.
With a rich software environment (Linux & Android), VIM3 provides a solid basis for developing effective specific applications on the one hand, or can be used with existing software solutions to take advantage of a great-performing and upgrabvdable Audio/Video source.
Naturally, the form-factor of VIM3 remains unchanged from generations 1 & 2.
VIM 3 Pro features a built-in Amlogic A311D hexa-core processor : 4x 2.2Ghz Cortex A73 (performance) and 2x 1.8GHz Cortex A53 (efficiency). The set is built into a compact low-energy chip with optimized heat dissipation.
LPDDR4 / 4X 32GB memory provide excellent fluidity and promote gapless playback even with large media files.
The graphics unit is an ARM G52 MP4 GPU which is able to achieve a rate of 800Mhz. Used in conjunction with a 10-bit decoder HW UHD 4K 75FPS H.265 decoder and a low latency H.265 1080p / 60fps H.264, it offers the possibility to steam simultaneously a 4K video on HDMI and another 1080p video on a secondary screen. The hardware also supports Dolby Vision and HDR10, HDR10+, HLG and PRIME HDR video processing
The board provides every useful piece of connectivity that one can expect to find in an SBC: USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, RJ45-compatible Wake On LAN.
Two sockets for Bluetooth or WiFi antenna can increase range of embedded wireless components.
Close to the GPIO is also an infrared receiver with two channels. This will delight users who prefer remote control than web interface control.
Finally, a TF card slot (MicroSD) expands the integrated Memory for the VIM. This configuration is convenient since it offers several ways to flash an OS and boot from it. One can connect the VIM to a computer via USB and directly flash the internal memory with a software solution (U-boats). Or use a memory card for conveying the OS to the EMMC memory, or simply use the memory card as a secondary storage space for high speed writing / reading.
This version inherits the three lateral control buttons from its predecessors. An ON / OFF button turns on and off properly and easily the device. The reset button allows quick reboot (very useful during development). A final function button can be assigned to a script / program of your choice. This last feature is not available natively on all operating systems (easier to operate under VIM Android distributions).
Countless accessories may upgrade your VIM3 to multiply its possibilities. A passive heatsink and a fan can be mounted simultaneously for the most demanding applications in terms of computing power, especially 4K video streaming.
