The iBasso AMP18 is a discrete headphone amplifier module specially designed to accompany the brand's DX300, DX320 and DX340 DAPs. It features an 80-transistor architecture, cascaded current feedback and a complementary push-pull output stage, ensuring stable and controlled amplification. Powered by 12V DC, it achieves 1740 mW + 1740 mW of power under 32Ω in Super Gain mode, extending its compatibility to low-impedance or high-power-demand headphones.
The AMP18 is a discrete architecture headphone amplifier module designed to deliver high output current, using a total of 80 transistors to increase dynamic headroom and load stability. This component density allows for more even current distribution, limiting the individual stress on each transistor while improving the performance of low-impedance headphones.
This hardware foundation is extended by a cascade current feedback architecture, distributing the gain over several stages in order to limit harmonic distortion without reducing bandwidth or introducing intermodulation distortion.

The amplification is based on a two-stage structure, each stage performing a specific function in the gain chain. The first stage combines an operational amplifier and buffer transistors, providing impedance matching and effective isolation from the source, thus preventing any unwanted attenuation or interaction with the next stage. This upstream stabilisation ensures that the transmitted signal retains its amplitude and phase structure.
The second stage uses transistors coupled to a current mirror, used as an active load to increase internal impedance and thus voltage gain. This configuration improves linearity while optimising the operating conditions of the amplifier transistors, reducing dynamic differences between half-waves and contributing to an overall reduction in distortion.
At the output stage, the AMP18 employs a complementary push-pull configuration, ensuring symmetrical amplification of both positive and negative half-waves. This topology reduces the crossover distortion typical of poorly polarised stages, while balancing the thermal and electrical behaviour of the components.

The module accepts an external 12V DC power supply, increasing the available voltage and therefore the power capacity. In Super Gain mode, the power reaches 1740mW + 1740mW under 32Ω, which significantly extends compatibility with low-impedance or moderate-efficiency headphones requiring sustained current.
However, it should be noted that although the AMP18 is compatible with the DX300, DX320 and DX340, only the DX340 allows the use of external power and the activation of Super Gain mode. This distinction determines access to the module's full capacity.
