The FiiO K13 is a versatile device that acts as both a DAC and headphone amplifier. Digital-to-analogue conversion is handled by a balanced R2R resistor network, supporting files up to PCM up to 32bit 384kHz and DSD256. For its amplification stage, the K13 uses OPA1642 and TPA6120A chips in a balanced arrangement for a total output power of up to 2x2400mW under 32Ω.
For its digital-to-analogue conversion stage, FiiO has developed an R2R ladder resistor network to offer 100% analogue conversion. Thus, the K13 incorporates a 24-bit R2R DAC using 48 precision resistors per channel, all in a fully balanced structure, ensuring self-correction of errors between channels while offering a better dynamic range.
The K13's R2R DAC also features NOS (Non-Oversampling) and OS (Oversampling) modes. OS mode allows you to increase your data stream up to a sampling rate of 384kHz, making it easier to apply digital filters that eliminate unwanted artefacts associated with the conversion process. The result is a clearer, but smoother sound.
NOS mode, on the other hand, takes the opposite approach by retaining the file's original sampling rate, thus not applying the same post-conversion filters. The result is certainly less precise, but also more raw and organic.
For its K13, FiiO has developed a 10-band equaliser, taking advantage of the technological platform offered by the XMOS XU316 USB interface. This allows you to customise the frequency response with excellent precision, as well as export, import, share and save equalisation curves. Whether you choose to use the recommended settings or share your own settings online with other enthusiasts, it is very easy to access them, either through the FiiO Control app or the online version.
The entire audio chain, including the R2R DAC, low-pass filter, volume control, and headphone amplifier, utilises fully balanced signal processing for excellent interference elimination, minimal distortion, and high dynamic range. The amplifier circuit also includes gain control and POP noise elimination for a robust and reliable audio experience. As a result, the K13 is capable of delivering robust amplification of 2400mW+2400mW into 32Ω.
The integrated 30W switching power supply is protected by nickel-plated alloy shielding, which significantly improves its anti-interference capabilities and ensures a cleaner power supply. Furthermore, a total of 18 low-dropout regulators coupled with ELNA RA3 capacitors ensure that every component of the K13 receives a perfectly stable, artefact-free power supply.
Finally, the K13 also has an external DC power input, allowing you to connect it to an external linear power supply of your choice if you wish.
Furthermore, in addition to its technical excellence, the K13 also boasts a minimalist and classy aesthetic that is truly stunning. It features an aluminium chassis that reveals the R2R circuit, coupled with a customisable RGB system that highlights the dials and illuminates the internal circuitry.
The front panel receives a high-contrast HD LCD screen that has been specially treated to prevent burn-in, allowing clear display of information such as sampling rate, volume, gain, and output mode.
For maximum convenience, the K13 features a Bluetooth 5.4 chip, allowing you to play your favourite tracks wirelessly thanks to support for LDAC, AAC and SBC codecs.
In order to offer maximum compatibility with most headphones and IEMs on the market, the K13 features three different gain settings, each with a specific volume control curve.
