The iBasso PB6 Macaw is a portable tube headphone amplifier designed to provide high-power amplification for mobile sources. The iBasso PB6 Macaw is based on a balanced architecture incorporating four JAN6418 tubes, enabling independent amplification of each channel whilst minimising unwanted crosstalk between channels. This configuration is complemented by a power supply voltage of 22.5V, which increases the available dynamic range and allows for a more stable reproduction of level variations, particularly during rapid signal changes.
Furthermore, the mechanical mounting of the tubes relies on a PORON suspension, which absorbs structural vibrations to minimise microphonic effects, thereby ensuring that the audio remains clear even when the device is in motion.
iBasso PB6 Macaw: Tube output mode and Class A/B
The PB6 operates using two complementary output modes, allowing you to adjust the amplifier’s behaviour to suit your taste. TUBE mode directly engages the JAN6418 stages, resulting in a warmer, smoother sound.
Conversely, the Class A/B mode utilises four BUF634A buffers, whose current capacity and fast response time enhance clarity and extend the dynamic range, resulting in a more detailed and analytical sound.
iBasso PB6 Macaw: Custom-made battery
The internal power supply is based on an 8.4 V lithium-ion polymer battery; its higher voltage reduces the need for the multiple DC-DC conversions typically required with 3.7 V cells. This simplification of the power architecture limits residual ripple, thereby enabling the analogue stages to be powered by a cleaner and more stable voltage.

In addition to battery operation, the PB6 features a 12V external power supply mode, allowing users to overcome the power constraints associated with portable use. This direct power supply increases the available power reserve, enabling the amplifier to deliver 2300mW + 2033mW into 32Ω whilst maintaining stable operation with complex loads.
iBasso PB6 Macaw: Volume control
The level control utilises an NJW1195A analogue controller in a 4-channel configuration, ensuring consistent channel management within a balanced configuration. This architecture allows for adjustment in 0.5dB increments, enabling precise adjustment of the listening level without affecting the balance between channels.
iBasso PB6 Macaw: Bandwidth modes
The PB6 offers two bandwidth modes to adapt the circuit’s response to the characteristics of the signal and the headphones being used. The wide-bandwidth mode prioritises a fast response, which improves the reproduction of transients and enhances the perception of micro-details. Conversely, this approach is complemented by a narrow-bandwidth mode that attenuates the fastest components of the spectrum, thereby softening the sound reproduction.
