Discover Audio Science Review's test of the Audiophonics DA-S250NC integrated amplifier. The DA-S250NC is a versatile, high-performance amplifier with a high power reserve of 2x 250W @ 4 ohm, featuring an ESS Technology ES9038Q2M DAC chip, a wide range of connectors and precise volume control. This power reserve is made possible by the Hypex Ncore NC252MP Class D amplifier module. In addition, the ES9038Q2M DAC chip supports high-resolution streams up to PCM 32bit 768kHz and native DSD up to DSD256. Its versatile connectivity includes numerous digital inputs, Bluetooth 5.0, speaker terminals and an RCA output for setting up a 2.1-channel system with active subwoofer, or for connecting another integrated amplifier. In terms of design, the DA-S250NC stands out thanks to its large acrylic panel covering the front panel and an OLED screen for information display and menu navigation. The amplifier is of course accompanied by a remote control for convenient and easy remote control.

Key points of the DA-S250NC test by Audio Science Review

Overview of measurements from the DA-S250NC's DAC section on the pre-out RCA output

DAC measurement dashboard

The DAC panel shows an output level of 0.8Vrms. Distortion is less than -110 dB, but as the output level is rather low, noise drops the SINAD to 103 dB. Still, this is a good performance compared with many other devices on the market.

Signal-to-noise ratio is good enough for 16-bit content

DAC SNR measurement

Almost perfect linearity

Multitone is quite good until the upper registers

DAC multi-tone measurement

Overall, the DA-S250NC remains a good DAC, the real question is how does this performance impact the amplifier part?

Amplifier measurement dashboard

Measurements were taken via the USB input, with a volume setting of -16.5dB to obtain 5W of power. The DA-S250NC shows very good performance, placing it above the average of many of the products tested.

Noise performance is very good, reaching almost 16-bit SNR at 5 watts

SNR measurement of the amplifier section

Frequency response is very good, showing no dependence on impedance loading

Measuring the frequency response of the amplifier section

Crosstalk is better than the average of all the amps tested

Measurement of amplifier crosstalk

Extremely low distortion and noise levels for max. power of 205W

THD+N measurement of the amplifier section

A distortion level so low that the maximum power level is measured with a THD of 0.3%.

Conclusion of the Audiophonics DA-S250NC test by Audio Science Review (Amir)

"The combination of a DAC and a Class D amplifier makes sense for most people who only want digital inputs. There are others than the DA-S250NC on the market, but most are generally not as good. Combining a DAC with a HYPEX amplifier, with an aesthetically pleasing front panel and remote control, seems to be the best option. Even if the DAC's performance is only just good, it matches up extremely well with the amplifier, which in turn offers very good measurements. All in all, the DA-S250NC is an appreciable device that I'd recommend!"
