The Audio-GD CD-7 HE is a Red Book CD transport designed to extract digital data from a disc and transmit it to an external DAC. Its Philips CDM-4 swing-arm mechanism relies on a programmable FPGA to handle S/PDIF demodulation, clock management and signal resynchronization. The HDMI-I2S, AES/EBU, BNC and coaxial RCA outputs make it easy to integrate into various digital setups.
The CD-7 HE has no built-in DAC and no analog output. It must therefore be paired with an external DAC to deliver the audio signal to an amplifier or Hi-Fi system.
The Philips CDM-4 mechanism with fixed laser power handles the playback of audio CDs, while a programmable FPGA integrates S/PDIF demodulation directly in hardware. The main clock is based on a 45.1584MHz Accsilicon AS318B femtosecond oscillator, from which the FPGA generates an 11.289MHz signal. Combined with a FIFO memory, this architecture resynchronizes the data before transmission and replaces dedicated demodulation circuits such as the DIR9001, WM8805 and AK411X.

The CD-7 HE features an HDMI-I2S output, a balanced 110Ω AES/EBU output, as well as two coaxial S/PDIF outputs, BNC and RCA, at the 75Ω standard. The HDMI-I2S output offers four formats configurable by DIP switch in order to match the different pin configurations of DACs. A 10MHz external clock input allows the use of an external reference. In AUTO position, the device detects it and locks onto it automatically, while the BNC and RCA outputs deliver a level of 0.5Vp-p into 75Ω.
The regenerative power supply reconstructs a 50Hz mains voltage with low distortion for the internal circuits, then two regenerative transformers separately power the digital sections and the output stages. The device uses a total of 17 regulated power supplies, including Class A power supplies for the HDMI-I2S, AES/EBU and coaxial buffers, DC servo power supplies for the RF stage, the DSP and the FPGA, as well as fast linear power supplies for the other circuits. This separation maintains a stable power supply for each function and makes it easier to pair the transport with an external DAC.
