MiniDSP Dirac Series DDRC-88D

Audio Processor DSP 7.1 Digital Dirac BNC

MiniDSP Dirac Series DDRC-88D Processeur Audio DSP 7.1 Digital Dirac BNC

The Dirac DDRC-88D fits between your digital source and your DAC. Like all Dirac Livre DSPs, the DDRC-88D allows you to measure your listening space in all its complexity in order to automatically apply several sound compensation levels. In other words, this device is able to listen to the sound specific to your installation in a given room to compensate for imperfections (such as the resonance of a frequency in the room for example or latency caused by an off-axis loudspeaker in a speaker). The processing algorithm is even able to correct for frequency and time variations caused by the physical presence of people listening in the room.

The DDRC-88D provides surprisingly clear sound that will highlight the qualities of an installation rather than its imperfections. The result is an improved stereo image that unfolds with high sharpness, increased realism, more accurate timbre and deeper bass.

To operate this unit must be associated with a microphone not supplied. It will be particularly effective with MiniDSP microphones that provide extremely accurate pickup. If you do not already have a measuring microphone, we recommend the UMIK-1 of MiniDSP.

An accessible and highly advanced PSD

The particularity of Dirac Live DSPs is to offer you an extremely simple configuration method based on the successive positioning of a specific microphone according to a step-by-step methodology. In other words, all you have to do is tell the software your sound ambitions (full-size cinema, home cinema or listening room) and it will tell you where to position the microphone. Dirac can then automatically take measurements to "diagnose" the part and installation by comparing them to an ideal model. This DSP configuration method allows to obtain a result approaching the acoustic treatment without requiring any work or particular knowledge in acoustics.

This step-by-step adjustment allows you to benefit from a DSP configured precisely to meet your expectations according to the problems inherent to your listening room.

Naturally, the DDRC-88D algorithm is capable of simultaneously processing multiple channels. It can be used to configure a DSP on sound systems with up to 8 channels (7.1). The automatic configuration of such an installation does not require any additional complexity.

Advanced manual configuration

Beyond the automatic configuration (which compares the measurement to an ideal reference sound rendition) it is possible to visualize the measured frequency response as well as the proposed correction for each channel. Depending on your preferences, you can modify the reference rendering and/or the proposed correction.

Frequency and pulse magnitude correction

Easy to connect

To facilitate its integration into complex installations, the DDRC-88D DSP has a very intuitive connection system. Only one dB25 cable is connected to the device housing. The latter is divided into 8 to give 4 BNC inputs and 4 BNC outputs. In order not to entangle the brushes, each of these inputs and outputs is identified by a simple color code.

ChannelColor
Input 1 & 2Violet
Input 3 & 4Blue
Input 5 & 6Green
Input 7 & 8Orange
Output 1 & 2Yellow
Output 3 & 4Red
Output 5 & 6Gray
Output 7 & 8Brown

Volume button

The interface is very refined. A volume button is also used to select one of the 4 registered DSP profiles. 4 LEDs identify the profile in use.

Great DSP and Enjoying DIRAC
I blew up my nanoSHARC recently which was a sad day, the DDRC-88D is not quite a drop-in replacement for the now-discontinued nanoSHARC, but I am really impressed so far.

The nanoSHARC ran filtering at 96khz, whereas the DDRC is 48khz only. I was a bit worried about that. I suspect that miniDSP did that to allow for more FIR taps for DIRAC processing.

I have not noticed the drop in internal sample rate affect the sound quality at all. But, I will say that the DIRAC processing has been simpler than performing FIR correction on separate outputs as I was doing on the nanoSHARC.

The unit is aimed at the 5.1 or 7.1 market but it is suitable for up to 2 x 4 way speaker active crossover. I am using it for a pair of 3 way speakers.

The unit in my setup takes digital (CD quality and 96khz/24 bit) from a DAP over SPDIF and then outputs to 3 Khadas Tone Boards, again via SPDIF.

Pretty easy to configure a crossover, I had used the nanoSHARC before and the DDRC-88BM plugin is similar.

DIRAC is a different software tool for measurement, which is a bit frustrating, but it has worked for me OK.

Overall really happy. Going to try and see if I can use different configurations (up to 4 configs) to allow me to cycle through the 4 SPDIF inputs. That would allow me to use it as a 4 input digital preamp, and switch between DAP and my ADC from my turntable. I am fairly sure that will work, but if not, then I will have to purchase some kind of SPDIF switcher.

The only pain is that all the SPDIF connections are BNC. I looked at getting a different Tascam style 25 pin connector with RCA plugs, but that wasn't cheap. Some BNC to RCA plugs solved the problem in the end.

If you are going to use this in a home audio scenario, then make sure you get the SPDIF version if you have SPDIF level kit. The AES/EBU version does run at higher signal voltages IIRC.
