The SMSL PL20 is positioned as a versatile CD player combining a dual CS43131 DAC architecture with a built-in ripper function, while ensuring SACD compatibility for high-resolution formats. This technical foundation is accompanied by extensive connectivity, from bidirectional Bluetooth to USB playback of DSD64 files, complemented by two dedicated headphone outputs in single-ended 3.5mm and balanced 4.4mm jacks. The unit can therefore be used with both physical media and digital sources, with the option of switching to an external DAC thanks to the optical and coaxial outputs.
SMSL PL20: A high-performance CD player
The PL20 is built around two CS43131 DAC chips that process audio signals from CDs. Beyond simple playback, the device includes a ripping function that allows tracks to be extracted directly to a connected USB flash drive. This practical approach is extended with SACD compatibility, which opens up access to high-resolution formats on physical media. For those who wish to use a dedicated converter, optical and coaxial digital outputs allow conversion to be transferred to an external DAC.
SMSL PL20: Complete connectivity
Connectivity also extends to wireless devices thanks to bidirectional Bluetooth 5.3, which can receive audio streams from a smartphone and transmit the signal to wireless speakers or headphones. This versatility is also found on the USB port, which accepts not only DSD64 (DFF/DSF) files, but also common formats such as WAV, FLAC, APE, WMA and MP3. For headphone listening, two outputs complete the connectivity options: a 3.5 mm jack and a 4.4 mm balanced output, allowing direct connection to any headphones without the need for an adapter.
