Key points of the Audiophonics EVO-SABRE review
by Michael Andrew

Characteristics

  • Easy-to-assemble DIY version, with detailed instructions and an estimated assembly time of less than an hour.
  • A wide range of connectors with XLR and RCA stereo outputs, as well as DAC Coaxial, Toslink, USB-B and Bluetooth inputs.
  • A Raspberry PI 4 module integrated into the case, with connectors available on the rear panel (USB LAN, HDMI OUT, Micro SD).
  • A versatile Hi-Fi device with many possible configurations. The EVO-Sabre can be used as a Stand Alone DAC, a streamer, with a CD player, NAS or hard disk, etc.
  • Two displays on the front panel; the first to show sample rate, volume and source, the second to display real-time track playback data (title, artist, etc.).
  • Two ES9038Q2M dual-mono DAC chips: each chip dedicates 100% of its computing power to a single channel of the stereo signal.
  • Remote control included for added convenience.

Performances

  • Excellent measurements by Audio Science Review
  • Can be used directly as a preamplifier thanks to its volume knob, depending on your Hi-Fi installation.
  • For his test, Michael Andrew used the EVO-SABRE directly coupled to a Camp Amp Mini and a pair of Klipsh RP600Ms: according to him, the result is a smooth sound with a very wide soundstage. Deep bass that still allows the midrange and treble to breathe, and perfect dynamics.

Michael Andrew's conclusion

The Audiophonics EVO-SABRE DAC/Streamer offers excellent sound reproduction for a wide range of functions, thanks to the integration of the Raspberry PI and Volumio. All at a very affordable price that defies all competition.

Hi, could you comment on the practical advantage of the open-source design for this product? I generally love it (DIY e-bike, Ubuntu OS, python & web programmer...), but about to acquire my first hi-fi system and wondering about a cheaper, proprietary alternative (Wiim Pro plus; https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/wiim-pro-plus-streamer-review.50254 ) that also has an excellent review on ASR and elsewhere. The one (and important thing) I can think of is the possible future changes in the streamer technology, and standard and platform. Probably the DYI can be updated / upgraded to track them, not sure about the proprietary version. Thinking about a 5 year horizon...

      Hi,
The DAC embeded is better than common streamer like the Wiim pro +, it's an open source device so you can also swap the default OS and do what you want with it if you've got some basic computer knowledge.

It is more complex and harder to implement but the overall quality and scalability are not the same.

      Best regards
