The Shanling SM50 is an all-in-one streamer that combines a DAC and headphone amplifier in a compact format. Its ESS ES9039Q2M DAC supports PCM files up to 768kHz 32bits and DSD512, while its headphone output delivers up to 700mW into 32Ω.
Designed for headphone listening or for integration into a hi-fi system, it combines network streaming, local playback and wireless connectivity. Its 4.5-inch touchscreen and the Eddict Controller app make playback control easy, while its preamplifier functions and digital outputs allow it to adapt to different setups.
The Shanling SM50 brings together a network player, a digital-to-analog converter and a headphone amplifier in a compact chassis. It can therefore serve as the main source of a hi-fi system, as a USB DAC for a computer or as a dedicated headphone listening device. Its 4.5-inch touchscreen, with a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels, displays playback information and provides access to controls directly from the front panel.

The SM50's Linux system supports network playback and local files, while the Eddict Controller app lets you browse music and control the device from a smartphone. This remote control complements the touchscreen without requiring a phone for everyday settings. The interface can also display VU meters, particularly during local playback.
Dual-band Wi-Fi provides connection to the home network for access to streaming services and playback from compatible network sources. Bluetooth 5.2 also allows music to be received directly from a mobile device; support for the LDAC, aptX, aptX HD, AAC and SBC codecs adapts this link to the capabilities of the source used. The SM50 can thus switch between network listening and Bluetooth transmission without changing devices.

Conversion is based on an ESS ES9039Q2M chip, combined with an FPGA and two local oscillators. This architecture supports playback of PCM files up to 768kHz 32bits and DSD512 from the network or local storage. In USB DAC mode, the SM50 supports PCM up to 384kHz 32bits and DSD256, while its coaxial digital output transmits PCM signals up to 192kHz 24bits.
The built-in headphone amplifier delivers up to 700mW into 32Ω and features 3.5mm jack and 4.4mm balanced outputs. This power covers different types of headphones without an external amplifier, while the specified values, THD+N of 0.0006%, signal-to-noise ratio of 123dB and dynamic range of 123dB, characterize the performance of the headphone section. For headphone listening in a shared environment, the SM50 thus brings together the source, conversion and amplification in a single device.

Beyond headphone listening, the SM50 can be used as a preamplifier or as a digital source, depending on the inputs and outputs used. Its connections include USB and Bluetooth digital inputs, a USB DAC input, headphone outputs, an RCA preamp output and a coaxial digital output. This versatility allows it to be integrated into an existing system, paired with a power amplifier or used as a playback hub in a compact setup.
